If you’ve ever seen the Samsung The Frame TV, then we’re willing to bet that you’ve fallen in love with the idea of concealing your TV. However, that price tag is certainly not as appealing as the hidden TV concept. The good news is that you can achieve the same effect without the exorbitant price tag. Designer Hollie Velten-Lattrell came up with a great idea that uses textiles to hide your TV. It really is a genius trick and only involves scissors, paint, fabric, and mounting hardware.
Hollie Velten-Lattrell, who owns design and creative firm Spaces by Hollie Velten, actually commissioned a textile cover for her client Margeaux Gertmenian’s TV when she decided to remodel her home in New Jersey. Gertmenian wanted her home to have a light an airy ocean and woodsy feel, but a TV would ruin that cabin in the woods atmosphere. That’s why they came up with the idea for a textile TV cover to hide the electronics when they’re not in use.
Velten-Lattrell then commissioned Janelle Peitrzak, an artist from All Roads Design in order to create the textile to be used. Using hanging hardware, the TV cover is essentially hung up like a tapestry that is mounted like a curtain. If you can, you can commission a TV cover from an artist, but you can also make your own with a DIY textile TV cover.
To make your own, simply use a think fabric and sew a pocket at the top of the fabric in order to hold the dowel. Once that’s done, paint or embellish the front in any way you choose. You can also just use a patterned fabric in a style that suits your home and your personal preference. Canvas or linen will work the best for this purpose.
Make sure you know the dimensions of your TV so that you can fully cover it. You can leave some buffer space around the edges of the tapestry so you can ensure it fully hides your TV.
To mount, install two study hooks about three inches above the TV. Cut the dowel so that it is 10 inches longer than your TV screen (5 on the left and 5 on the right) and then slip it into the pocket. Place the tapestry on the hooks using the dowel.
Whenever you want to watch TV, you can roll up the fabric on the hooks by the dowel. That’s it! You can now transform your living room with your textile TV cover and turn it into a piece of art in your living space.
